Muhammad Fadli is a documentary and portrait photographer based in Jakarta, Indonesia. Born and raised in West Sumatra, Muhammad Fadli relocated to the Indonesian capital almost a decade ago to pursue his career as a photographer. After working briefly for an Indonesian news magazine, he continued his career as a freelancer, focusing on documentary and portrait photography. His personal long-term projects reflect his affection to themes such as history, culture, and social issues. Apart from personal projects, he splits his time between editorial assignments, commercial works, and picture editing. More recently, he started to participate as a mentor at Arkademy, a collective focusing on photography education in Indonesia. Fadli’s work has been exhibited in various photo festivals and published in international publications such as National Geographic, Wall Street Journal, M Le Monde, Süddeutsche Zeitung Magazin, and Der Spiegel. He is one of the recipients of The GroundTruth Project Climate Change Fellowship in 2016 and was awarded a prize by the Istanbul Photo Awards 2018. His first monograph titled Rebel Riders (2018), published by Dienacht, Leipzig, Germany, tells the story about extreme scooter communities in Indonesia. Currently, he is preparing another book, scheduled to be published by early 2021.
